Artist Brief: Celebrate Chelston!

Artist Brief: Celebrate Chelston!

Torbay Culture would like to commission an artist(s) to work with the community of Chelston, Torquay, to celebrate the place and its people. We seek expressions of interest from creative practitioners with a commitment to social engagement. The successful artist will be informed by Chelston’s residents and will work with them to create an artwork or artworks. The work should culminate in June in a way that inspires and engages the wider community, beyond those who have participated in its creation.

This project is owned by the residents of Chelston, who have contributed to the writing of this brief and will form the interview panel, supported by Torbay Culture and Torbay Community Development Trust. They have expressed interest in outdoor arts (carnivals, processions, street theatre, circus, dance), communal activities based around food (eating together), visual arts and crafts, music/singing, creative workshops and celebratory events. However, we are very open to considering other art forms and approaches that will bring a wide range of people together to celebrate and enhance a pride in where they live.
